On Set of Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride!

When I heard that Maggie Gyllenhaal was bringing her latest film, The Bride!, to Staten Island’s Snug Harbor, I couldn’t resist sneaking a peek. A period film set in 1935, The Bride! reimagines the classic Bride of Frankenstein story, and with Gyllenhaal at the helm as writer, director, and producer, this is shaping up to be an exciting, female-led horror drama.

A Stroll Through The Bride! Set at Snug Harbor

Snug Harbor, with its grand historical architecture and lush gardens, was the perfect backdrop for The Bride!’s eerie 1930s aesthetic. Walking through the set, I felt like I had stepped into another era—so, naturally, I had to blend in.

Dressed in the most period-accurate ensemble I could put together, I wandered the film’s set, soaking in the old-world charm of the New Niagara Hotel facade, vintage props, and dimly lit alleyways that seemed straight out of a noir film. The details were impeccable, with the entire area transformed to transport audiences back to 1935.

Why The Bride! is One to Watch

With an all-star cast—including Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, and Annette Bening—Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! is already generating buzz. If The Lost Daughter was any indication, The Bride! will be an atmospheric, deeply human take on a genre film, breathing new life into an old classic.

As the film’s release date nears and more details emerge, keep an eye on Staten Island’s Snug Harbor—it just might appear in the trailer. In the meantime, I’ll be reminiscing about my unexpected time-travel moment on set, with my camera and 1930s-inspired outfit in tow.
